Conquering the Ring Road – Iceland, June 2018 (Part 4)

Day 4

We continued east, towards Borgarfjörður Eystri. It was a long drive among the Eastfjords. The fjord scenery was a stark contrast to what we had been seeing the past 3 days. From driving through flat, desolate lands with mountains in the distance, we saw the blue sea right next to grey mountains, with their peaks dusted in snow and lower slopes covered in green grass and lupines.

First view of the coast in a while

We zigzagged around the Eastfjords. It was really nice to be near the coast for the most part of the drive.

Fáskrúðsfjörður, a quaint little village in the centre of the Eastfjords. This postcard-like photo was taken from the pier of Fosshotel
Lupines in a random residential area we came across, near Lake Lagarfljót

On the way to Borgarfjörður Eystri, we drove on possibly the scariest road we’ve ever been on in our lives… Route 94. It started as a ~30 kilometre stretch of flat gravel road, and then it turned into a precarious drive up a mountain, along the edge of a sheer cliff face with no barriers.

Your eyes aren’t deceiving you – those are indeed clouds
And yes, we had to drive through the clouds

Needless to say, Naz and I were completely silent during the drive. I was wondering what the hell I had gotten ourselves into, and prayed that we would pass through this route safely. Thankfully, we got through it unscathed, and were excited to see the reason we made the detour to Borgarfjörður Eystri…

Puffins!

Seeing them in their natural habitat was a surreal experience. We were there at the right time because puffins only come here during the warmer months. In the winter months, they go further out to sea. I even bought a puffin stuffed toy to remind me of this experience.
